Noah Vanden Abeele
About
With his third album Magnolia, Noah returns to the essence. Back to when he played the piano for himself, in total freedom. This solo album reveals his unique bond with the instrument. It sounds fragile, intimate, yet intense. Each piece balancing between simplicity and complexity, with complete honesty.
Noah Vanden Abeele is an artist who continues to spread his wings in the world of music.
With his debut album UNIVERSE (2018) and its follow-up HORIZON (2022), he has performed at venues including Gent Jazz, Flagey Piano Days, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. As his audience grows, he increasingly performs to sold-out venues.
Noah has been improvising on the piano since childhood, even before taking his first lessons. Later, as he immersed himself in classical music and obtained his Master's degree in piano at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the desire for freedom remained strong. "My relationship with music conflicted with the conservative values and tacit codes of the institution. But I remain grateful for the training I received there: it taught me a great deal and allowed me to deepen my technical, musical, and harmonic knowledge."
After a long journey with detours driven by a growing urge for change and renewal, the intimate connection with his piano only deepened.
"The common thread in my life and my music is freedom. My two previous albums were well received and I am very grateful for that. The risk then lies in wanting to stay in your comfort zone. But then, who are you as an artist? One must remain true to himself. And I want to be free, not conform to anything or anyone. My piano is my anchor, my buddy. I feel like nothing and no one can break this intimate relationship I have with my instrument."
MAGNOLIA is the culmination of that long journey. The moment when the tree has formed strong roots, the flower unfolds and reaches full bloom after enduring many seasons.
In addition to composing, Noah also shares his talent for improvisation with other artistic disciplines. For thirteen years, he has been one of the resident pianists at the Royal Film Archive CINEMATEK in Brussels, where he has improvised live for more than 600 silent films.
